Fluorinated and or High GWP (High Global Warming Potential) gases, such as Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), halocarbons (HCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), are emitted during a variety of industrial processes. In addition, some high GWP gases are being used to replace ozone-depleting substitutes (e.g. CFCs), allowing the rapid phase out of these gases.
Major sources of fluorinated and/or High GWP (High Global Warming Potential) gases include: - Aluminum production: PFCs (CF4 and C2F6) are emitted as byproducts of the aluminum smelting process.
- Electrical transmission and distribution: SF6 is widely used by the electricity industry in circuit breakers, gas-insulated substations, and switchgear.
- Magnesium production and processing: SF6 is used in the production and casting of magnesium metal to improve safety and metal quality.
