The Chicago Climate Exchange is a voluntary cap-and-trade emission trading system operating mainly in the USA. CCX members commit to reduce their emissions by a certain amount each year, measured against their original baseline.

Companies that achieve reductions beyond their commitment can then sell the remaining emissions on the CCX. Companies can also invest in carbon reduction projects, which generally involved methane capture, forestry and agriculture projects.

The CCX has developed standardized rules for issuing carbon credits for the following types of offset projects:

  • Methane destruction
  • Agricultural practices
  • Forestry practices
  • Other GHG emission mitigation projects in Brazil
  • Renewable energy
  • Clean Development Mechanism Eligible Projects
